Overview

The Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA), has a full-time 40 hrs/wk opening for an Accountant I in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This position will provide overall general ledger (GL) accounting functions, and to participate in a distributed system of internal financial control.

Responsibilities

This position requires moderate supervision and oversight by the agency finance manager and consults finance manager about non-routine issues.

 

  1. Examine, verify, reconcile, and process financial information submitted by agency staff.
    1. Provide feedback and training concerning bookkeeping and financial reporting.
    2. Monitor compliance to company policy, government regulations and agency procedures. Reports variances to agency finance manager with suggestions for resolution.
  2. Assists with month-end, quarter-end and year-end account closing activities and reconciliations. 
    1. Maintain detailed listings of the contents of all balance sheet accounts.
    2. Review expense and income accounts for accuracy.
    3. Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.
    4. Investigate discrepancies in all areas of responsibility. Refers results to agency finance manager for resolution.
  3. Maintain general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries for accruals and variances.
    1. Maintain the accuracy and integrity of accounting records.
    2. Participate in process design and improvement, to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of financial management systems.
  4. Assist with the preparation of reports provided to management .
    1. Provide appropriate accounting information to agency staff as requested.
    2. Assist various departments in accounting issues and queries.
  5. Document and enhance standardized controls and procedures by working with other functional departments to document procedures.
  6. Adhere to standard accounting principles.
  7. Perform agency –specific duties such as fixed asset processing, grant reporting, RGA/CGA maintenance and/or benefit accounting processes.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  1. Advanced knowledge and skills in the use and maintenance of financial accounting software.
  2. Advanced knowledge and skills of MS Office application use and development - experience with macro programming preferred.
  3. Strong written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to staff with varying geographical locations, cultural paradigms and educational perspectives.
  4. Ability to organize projects, set priorities, and maintain schedules.
  5. Ability to perform work very accurately and dependably.
  6. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of the Finance team.
  7. Familiarity with databases and queries.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to Christ and to the goals of the Christian Reformed Church and its ministry agencies.

Additional Information

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  2. At least one year accounting experience.
