Back to God Ministries International (BTGMI), the global media ministry of the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA), has an opening for a full-time Communications Manager in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This position plays a key role in BTGMI’s Advancement Team, developing and implementing a communications and marketing strategy for BTGMI, which connects constituents to the ministry and inspires increasing levels of generosity and engagement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following:

  1. Direct the communications and marketing strategy for BTGMI.
  2. Develop and implement both long-range and annual communications and marketing plans, which are consistent with the strategy.
  3. Write compelling pieces for a variety of contexts including:
    a. Articles for the denominational magazine and other church publications
    b. Ministry stories
    c. Proposals for donors
    d. Other informational and promotional pieces as needed
  4. Coordinate the work of designers, photographers, videographers, social media specialists (both internal shared services staff and/or freelancers) to produce communications materials in print, in video, or online.
  5. Create and manage content for the BTGMI website.
  6. Act as the primary brand steward for BTGMI, educating colleagues on how to implement the brand.
  7. Communicate with international ministry leaders to gather appropriate information and statistics on ministry activities for reporting.
  8. Facilitate good internal communication practices.
  9. Advise members of the Leadership Team on communications-related matters.
  10. Serve as BTGMI’s representative on the denominational communications council.
  11. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities



  1. Membership in a Christian church and agreement with the doctrine of the CRC signified by signing a covenant statement.
  2. Demonstrated experience creating and managing a comprehensive strategic communications and marketing plan.
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to write effectively for a variety of contexts.
  4. Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple projects with overlapping timeframes.
  5. Knowledgeable about key trends in communications and marketing with the ability to think strategically about how these trends affect BTGMI’s communications.
  6. Understanding of concepts of branding and brand management.
  7. Flexible, collaborative attitude; enjoy working as part of a team.
  8. Excellent general computer skills including MS Word and Excel.
  9. Experience with managing website content using a CMS.
  10. Good design sense.  Basic skills with Adobe Creative Suite tools (Photoshop, InDesign) are an asset but not essential.
  11. Working knowledge of the Christian Reformed Church structure, agencies, and constituency is an asset but not essential.

Additional Information

  1. Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in English, communications or marketing.
  2. At least 3 years related job experience.
