The Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) has an opening for a 1-year full-time (40 hrs/wk) Mobilizing and Advocacy Fellow with the Office of Social Justice (OSJ). This opportunity is being offered to candidates with a Bachelor's degree or higher, or equivalent experience, and interested and qualified in the field of public justice and faith.

The Fellow will help the OSJ develop and assist in timely and effective advocacy and mobilizing strategies relating to selected issues of U.S. and Canadian policies, specifically those that benefit people experiencing poverty and oppression. They will gain invaluable hands-on experience in real world advocacy and faith-based mobilizing. The successful applicant will have an undergraduate degree or higher, or equivalent experience, and be able to live and work in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Develop the capabilities of the Office of Social Justice to educate and empower agencies and members of the CRC to become more effective advocates for/with people experiencing poverty and oppression on selected issues of U.S. and Canadian public policy. Strengthen efforts to mobilize church members and communities toward greater engagement with social justice and public policy. Develop professional and interpersonal skills, maintain and build upon professional networks, and deepen an understanding of advocacy and education at the intersection of church, ministry, racial justice, social justice, and public policy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following

1. Track current events, policy changes, and legislation in both the U.S. and Canada related to OSJ’s focus areas:

  • Immigration
  • Refugees
  • Creation Care (Climate Change)
  • Abortion and Sanctity of Human Life
  • Religious Persecution
  • Criminal Justice Reform
  • Poverty and Hunger
  • Peacebuilding (Middle East Peace)

2. Track the advocacy efforts of OSJ/CRC partner organizations.

3. Collaborate with OSJ staff and other CRC agencies in determining appropriate advocacy actions on legislation relevant to their core issues of ministry focus.

  • Write timely, concise action alerts to encourage CRC constituencies to advocate on policy issues.
  • Assist in tracking and evaluating alert effectiveness.
  • Research issues and create content framing social justice from a Reformed perspective. Create political analysis for websites, newsletters, or internal use.

4. Represent OSJ/CRC at meetings with coalition partners and other events organized by partner organizations and, when required, engage in direct advocacy with legislators.

5. Assist the OSJ team with general writing and collaborative tasks as necessary.

  • Coordinate the annual Advent Devotion project.
  • Prepare weekly news summaries for the OSJ Prayers newsletter.
  • Contribute to other newsletters as assigned.

6. Provide support for workshops and congregational mobilizing.

Supervisor Responsibilities



  • Commitment to the journey of a lived faith in Christ.
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn the Reformed world-and-life view, especially the intersection of public policy and Reformed social ethics and action.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to synthesize complex political material.
  • Self-directed and capable of working without close supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in small groups.
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Able to grasp new concepts quickly and efficiently.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher, or equivalent experience, in public policy, political science, international development, social work, or similar (background in political systems of both Canada and the U.S. preferred but not required).

Work Environment

The location for this position is at the denominational offices in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Some travel will be required, including one to two trips to Washington, D.C., and perhaps to other locations of CRC concentration.
